Gana River Outfitters provides horseback and backpack
hunts in the Mackenzie Mountains of Canada's North West
Territories. We are a choice destination for Dall Sheep
hunting, Mountain Caribou hunting and Alaska Yukon
Moose hunting.
The Mackenzie Mountains is one of the last undeveloped
wilderness areas in North America. Resident hunting pressure
is virtually nil, and game populations are strong due to our
modest harvest regime. Our exclusive area is 6000 square
miles of pristine Canadian wild country. Browse the photos in
our website and you will see why Gana River's reputation for
quality hunts is known wherever the talk turns to mountain
hunting in the north. Gana River: forty years of tradition !
The northern Mackenzie Mountains are known for heavy
based Dall rams. Our healthy sheep population ensures we
harvest plenty of old broomed rams, as well as some of the
long tipped "argali" style sheep. Our Dall Sheep hunts are by
either backpack or horseback.
Many hunters choose to add a Mountain caribou to their Dall
Sheep hunt, and the Gana River country has more than its
share of the massive caribou bulls the north country is known
for.
We take only a limited number of moose hunters each year,
but the results are usually very respectable. Sixty inch bulls are
not uncommon in this part of the world. Many of the Gana
River hunters choose to hunt moose on horseback, but we do
offer backpack hunts for them too...a fine way to learn just how
much these brutes weigh.
Our mixed bag hunts offer the chance to try for Dall Sheep,
Caribou and Moose. Wolves are also taken every year. There
is no grizzly hunting in the NWT except for residents, but bear
sightings are common.
On our traditional style horseback sheep hunts you will be in
one of our two horse camps. We have 2 good strings of well
broken mountain ponies, and each camp has a wrangler-
though most of our wranglers are guides as well! There is a
maximum of 2 hunters per camp.
On our backpack sheep hunts you will be travelling light in the
mountains. Backpackers enjoy the true freedom of the hills.
We often camp high on the mountain and do much of our
glassing looking down at the sheep. These hunts require a
reasonable measure of fitness, but it is an amazing way to
experience the north.
At Gana River Outfitters we pride ourselves on our SERVICE. Our
guides are experienced, your trophies are well cared for, and our
base camp is cozy and fun. We are family friendly and wives and
kids are all encouraged to come along.
At least once in your life, experience the North West Territories!

Mike Leibfried and outfitter Harold Grinde show off 3 huge wolves taken on a March wolf hunt from our Palmer Lake Base camp. The country is
spectacular with it's covering of snow, if possible even more beautiful than in the summer. The hunt was done for the first time this year. We
used snow machines to access different areas and called these wolves into shooting range. If you are interested in seeing the Mackenzie
Mountains with a covering of winter snow and having a chance to take a wolf with a prime pelt give Harold a call. We hope to do a couple of
trips next year in early April.
